CEDAR KEY, Fla. (WCJB) – A search effort is underway for two teen girls who disappeared while off the coast of Cedar Key.

U.S. Coast Guard officials confirm search teams are trying to locate the missing girls. Air units are involved in the search.

Levy County Sheriff’s deputies say the 16-year-old girls didn’t return from a paddle board excursion. They were last seen around 4 p.m. paddling toward Cedar Key from Atsena Otie.

They were sharing a black and white paddle board. The sheriff’s office and Florida Fish and Wildlife officer are aiding in the search.

Citizen boaters in the area have also taken to the water to aid in the search.
