Stewartville 20, Totino-Grace 14

STEWARTVILLE — Stewartville faced the toughest team competition it’s played in over a year and had just enough to beat perennial fellow power Totino-Grace 20-14 in Skyway District football for the Tigers’ 30th consecutive victory.

The two-time defending state champion Tigers led 8-0 at halftime, using a Simon Emanuel 1-yard run followed by a Malik Abdi two-point conversion run.

The Tigers made it 14-0 when Abdi scored from one yard out with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Totino-Grace tied it at 14-all with two straight unanswered touchdowns before Abdi scored from 3 yards out with 50 seconds left in regulation for the winning margin.

Stewartville used a dominant running game to get the win. It finished with 318 yards rushing and just 43 passing.

Abdi was by far the Tigers’ leader on the ground, finishing with a whopping 261 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He averaged just less than 7 yards per carry.

BYRON — Carson Heimer rushed for 244 yards and three touchdowns and also caught a pass for a touchdown as Byron beat fellow power Orono.

One week ago, Orono beat Class 4A state defending champion Becker.

Heimer rushed the ball 28 times. He had three catches for 22 yards.

The Bears, who moved to 2-0, also got a strong game from quarterback Eli Rodemeyer. The junior was 7-for-10 for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Keaton Hanson had 62 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Orono did most of its offensive work through the air. It was 19-for-38 passing for 228 yards.

Byron forced three Orono turnovers. Byron had 405 yards of offense, 302 of them rushing.

K-M 35, Minneapolis Washburn 14

KASSON — A big second quarter and a balanced offensive attack helped Kasson-Mantorville improve to 2-0 with a big victory against Minneapolis Washburn on Friday at KM Telecom Stadium.

The KoMets scored the first three touchdowns of the game and never trailed against the Millers.

K-M led 7-0 after one quarter, then tacked on three touchdowns in a dominant second quarter to build a 28-7 halftime lead.

K-M’s Keymoni Bent provided a big spark late in the first half, returning a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, to immediately answer Washburn’s first score.

Parker Richards led a KoMets rushing attack that saw seven different players carry the ball and combine for 178 yards on 35 carries. Richards ran 13 times for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Kaylub White added 40 yards on just 3 carries, and Jeremiah Peterson-Gordon had 38 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts. JPG finished with 90 total yards in the game, including three catches for 52 yards.

Quarterbacks Grady Babock and Logan Looks combined to go 6-for-9 passing for 113 yards and a TD — a 25-yard Babcock-to-Miles Bungum scoring strike.

The KoMets finished with 291 yards of total offense, while Washburn had 270, including 212 on the ground.

Fillmore Central 30, Southland 22

HARMONY — Fillmore Central did just enough to get by Southland 30-22 in Mid-South District action.

The Falcons trailed 14-6 at halftime, but three touchdowns in the second half put them on top in the end.

FC’s Kane Larson rushed for 80 yards on 18 touches with two touchdowns. Cody Serfling added one rushing and one receiving TD in the win.

Henry Wiste was 9-for-18 for the Rebels, passing for 106 yards, one TD and no interceptions. Wiste also ran for 44 yards on 10 carries.

Fillmore Central put up 244 total offensive yards and Southland 249.

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 42, Lewiston-Altura 14

WATERVILLE — Waterville-Elysian-Morristown used a big and physical rushing attack to overwhelm the Lewiston-Altura defense and walked away with a 42-14 win.

W-E-M scored the first three touchdowns of the game as it took a 22-0 lead. L-A didn’t get on the board until midway through the second quarter when Jayden Hansen connected with Gavin Bambanek on a 70-yard touchdown pass. Hansen then hit Cole Kennedy on a 3-yard pass for a touchdown.

W-E-M rushed 43 times for 251 yards. L-A got 201 yards passing, with 146 of them coming from Hansen. He was 4-for-10 but had three interceptions. Bambanek had two catches for 79 yards.

Blue Earth 22, Blooming Prairie 14

BLUE EARTH — Blooming Prairie saw its record dip to an uncharacteristic 0-2 with a 22-14 loss at Blue Earth.

The Blossoms lost despite a strong game from quarterback Gabe Staloch. He finished 21-for-36 for 159 yards and one touchdown. Jaxon Meier was his leading receiver with 48 yards on seven catches.

Lukas Denherder led Blooming Prairie in rushing with 63 yards gained on 14 carries.

Blooming Prairie led 14-8 at halftime but then was shut out the remainder of the game while Blue Earth scored six points in the third quarter and eight in the fourth.

Blue Earth showed off a dominant running game as it finished with 248 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

NEW RICHLAND — Hayfield fell behind early, but nearly rallied all the way back from a 20-point deficit before running out of a time in a 27-21 Mid-South District loss at New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Friday.

Vikings running back Kael Steele followed a 200-yard performance in last week’s season opener with another solid game. He ran 22 times for 72 yards and two of Hayfield’s three touchdowns.

Steele’s 2-yard scoring run late in the first quarter pulled the Vikings within 13-7. But NRHEG scored on a pair of long runs (13, 31 yards) in the fourth quarter to go up by 20.

Hayfield battled back, on a 1-yard run by Steele and an 84-yard punt return touchdown by Chase Kiser — the second consecutive week the Vikings’ special teams have returned a kick for a TD — but they ran out of time and couldn’t complete the comeback.

Sophomore quarterback Charlie Walker passed for 153 yards in defeat.

The Vikings (1-1) host United South Central at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Triton 21, Rushford-Peterson 6

DODGE CENTER — The Triton football team made things work without star Pierce Petersohn.

Petersohn, who injured his shoulder last week in the first half of a loss to Goodhue, didn’t play Friday night as Triton notched a 21-6 win over Rushford-Peterson.

It was Rushford-Peterson that upset Caledonia last week.

Triton fell behind 6-0 against R-P, then outscored the Trojans 21-0 the rest of the way. The Cobras led 7-6 at intermission.

Triton outgained R-P 231-136 in total offense. It got 143 yards of that on the ground, 88 through the air. R-P had 131 yards rushing and just 5 passing.

Graden Thomas filled in at quarterback for Petersohn and did an admirable job. He was 4-for-10 passing for 88 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 16 times for 42 yards and had a 14-yard touchdown run to close the game.

Jackson Kraemer rushed 20 times for 86 yards for Triton.

Chatfield 26, Dover-Eyota 14

CHATFIELD — Chatfield got a big game from punter Sean Kirchner and knocked off Dover-Eyota 26-14.

Kirchner finished with six punts and averaged a lofty 43.5 yards on them. That included a crucial 65-yarder in the second half.

Kirchner also blocked a punt in the third quarter, recovered it and then ran it in for a touchdown.

Chatfield (2-0) led just 12-7 at halftime against a D-E team that slipped to 1-1.

Logan Pearson scored Chatfield’s first touchdown on a short pass that he turned into a 32-yard TD. Quarterback Carter Ask finished his night 5-for-13 passing for 85 yards. Pearson had three catches for 46 yards. D’Andre Williams rushed 14 times for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Joel Skrukrud had six catches for Dover-Eyota for 85 yards and a touchdown.

ELGIN — Pine Island recorded a shutout victory for the second straight week, taking down Plainview-Elgin-Millville 35-0 in Southeast Central District football.

Nick Thein added three rushing touchdowns to his season total for the Panthers, totaling 216 yards on 17 carries.

The Panthers went up 14-0 in the first quarter and never looked back.

Alex Knox was 6-for-9, throwing for 96 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

PEM’s Nolan Ford recorded 40 yards on 25 carries.

The Panthers put up 393 total offensive yards to the Bulldogs’ 61.

Lake City 61, La Crescent-Hokah 28

LAKE CITY — Lake City recovered from a disastrous end to the first half by scoring 30 third-quarter points to roll past La Crescent-Hokah 61-28.

The Lancers took their only lead of the night by scoring with 37 seconds remaining in the half to draw within 19-14 and then scoring on the final play of the first half from three yards out following a blocked punt to take a 20-19 lead at intermission.

Lake City dominated from there as quarterback Colter Hegge accounted for six touchdowns, five of which came on the ground. Hegge had touchdown runs of 13, 17 and 8 yards in the third quarter alone and also recovered a key fumble.

Ellis Banks had 115 yards on the ground, including a pair of touchdown runs for the Tigers, who amassed 402 rushing yards as a team. Banks also had a fumble recovery for the second consecutive week.

Caledonia 40, St. Charles 16

CALEDONIA — Caledonia was no real match for St. Charles in Southeast Central District action as the Warriors claimed a 40-16 victory.

Will Allen was 7-for-10, passing for 115 yards and one touchdown for the Warriors, while Jack Schmitz rushed for 200 yards on 15 touches (13.3 yards per carry) with three touchdowns. Grant King caught one TD pass, recording 41 yards on two receptions.

Bryndon Koeppel finally put the Saints on the board in the third quarter with a 3-yard rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion pass from Cade Delger to Jackson Vangundy made the score 27-8. St. Charles reached the end zone again at the end of the fourth quarter, but by then it was too little, too late.

SPRING VALLEY — Kaaleem Reiland rushed for 117 yards on 14 carries and Kingsland roared to an easy 36-0 win over Grand Meadow.

Reiland, a senior who is bound for the University of Minnesota Duluth on a football scholarship next year, also scored a pair of touchdowns.

Bentley Wiersma rushed 10 times for 81 yards and a touchdown.

Reiland also passed for 94 yards, going 6-for-12 with one touchdown and one interception.

Mabel-Canton 32, Houston 14

MABEL — Mabel-Canton grabbed a quick 20-0 lead and never trailed after that as it beat Houston 32-14.

M-C finished with 169 yards rushing and 132 passing. Kale Eiken rushed for 60 yards on 13 carries and Brevyn Tollefsrud rushed for 45 yards on seven carries.

Tollefsrud also had 90 yards receiving on six catches.

M-C got 57 yards rushing from Hector Steinfeldt and 52 from Elliot Frauenkron. Steinfeldt passed for 98 yards.

Tollefsrud led the M-C defense with 12 tackles. Underbakke had 10.

SPRING GROVE — Spring Grove used an impressive rushing attack to sprint to its second win a row to start the season.

The Lions rushed for 256 yards and six rushing touchdowns, while holding FBA to just 62 total yards on 52 plays — that includes (-)26 rushing yards on 26 carries.

Jacob Solum had a pair of 2-yard rushing touchdowns, Ricard Reynolds had a 4-yard score, while sophomore Ezra Konkel had a 50-yard rushing TD. Konkel finished with a team-best 95 yards on four carries. Quarterback Dylan Halverson rushed for a 20-yard score as part of a 13-carry, 87-yard night. He also finished 10 of 13 for 154 yards with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Dash Ranzenberger and a 58-yard TD to Reynolds.
