The Punisher is experiencing the end of an era before his next Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance. Jon Bernthal is an incredibly busy actor. He has played a guest or supporting role in some of the best movies released in the past couple of decades, appearing in projects like The Wolf of Wall Street, Ford v Ferrari, The Many Saints of Newark, and more.
That said, it is on TV that Bernthal has really left his mark. The actor famously played Shane Walsh on AMC’s The Walking Dead, recently playing the key role of Mikey Berzatto in the acclaimed series The Bear. However, it was as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, that Bernthal got to join some of the MCU’s best TV shows.
The actor led his own The Punisher series after debuting as the anti-hero in Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, appearing in multiple shows in Netflix’s The Defenders Saga. The project serves as Marvel Studios’ latest MCU Special Presentation, spotlighting the Punisher as his revenge mission against a crime family puts him in the crosshairs of dozens of criminals. Now, Disney+ has officially marked the end of an era for Bernthal’s Punisher.
The Punisher: One Last Kill Has Finally Been Dethroned
The Punisher: One Last Kill was released on Disney+ on May 12, exactly one week after Daredevil: Born Again season 2 came to a close without a single appearance from the Marvel hero. The MCU Special Presentation debuted as the most-watched movie on Disney+ worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. Over the next month, the Frank Castle project would remain on top of the streamer’s global charts for a decent period, later hanging on to other spots in Disney+’s Global Top 10. After a successful run, that era has now ended, as The Punisher: One Last Kill is officially off the charts.
The Punisher: One Last Kill is no longer on Disney+’s Global Top 10 Movies list, with that chart being led by a $1.5 billion space opera, aka Avatar: Fire and Ash. Other movies currently trending on Disney+ worldwide include the horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, multiple Toy Story movies, both animated Moana movies, and more. While it is the end of an era for Bernthal’s Punisher, fans of the character better be prepared for a new one to begin later this month. That is due to how Bernthal will finally star in his first MCU movie, with the Punisher seemingly playing a major role in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The MCU’s next movie should easily make over $1 billion to become one of the biggest releases of 2026. It swings into theaters on July 31, with Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Michael Mando as Scorpion, Zendaya as MJ, Sadie Sink rumored to be Jean Grey, and more.
Based on that cast list alone and all the anticipation for the first MCU Spider-Man movie in five years, Bernthal’s Punisher will grow in importance exponentially before July is over. Sure, The Punisher: One Last Kill dropping off Disney+’s global charts is a sad occurrence for the character, but a natural one after nearly two months. Now, the next step on the Punisher’s MCU journey can start, and it seems to be an exciting one for Frank Castle.
