The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created by artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and debuted in 1984 in a comic book published by Mirage Studios. The characters subsequently achieved massive popularity after the 1987 debut of their first animated series, leading to the 1990s films among other notable media tie-ins. The three films use animatronic costumes created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to depict the characters — four turtles who have been mutated into human form and become ninja warriors. In 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, TV reporter April O’Neil (Judith Hoag) is attacked by thugs during a massive crime wave, and rescued by the ninja turtles — Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello. She discovers they live in the sewer and have been trained in the martial arts by Splinter, a mutated rat with the wisdom of a sensei. April and the Turtles learn the city’s criminals are being guided by the villainous Foot Clan, led by the evil ninja master Shredder. The film was a huge box office hit, topping the weekend charts its first four weeks in theaters, ultimately grossing more than $135 million domestically and, after a series of re-releases, $202 million worldwide. In the 1991 sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, the Ninja Turtles learn more about the mysterious substance that created them as they continue to fight the Foot Clan alongside April (now played by Paige Turco), while Shredder plans to use the last canister of Ooze to create his own vicious mutant warriors. The film includes the infamous scene where the Turtles battle Shredder’s forces at a Vanilla Ice concert as he performs his “Ninja Rap.” The third film, 1993’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, finds the heroes transported back in time to feudal Japan after April discovers an ancient magical scepter at a flea market. To survive in the past, the Turtles must save April from the wicked Lord Norinaga (Sab Shimono).
