In the opening round of the 2025 Autumn Nations Series, Scotland demolished the USA Rugby 85–0 at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh — their largest-ever win margin in international play.
The world No. 8 Scots dominated from the opening whistle, scoring three tries in five minutes. By halftime, the score sat at 45-0. The game seemed already won.
The USA certainly turned up the heat and momentarily slowed their momentum in the second half. However, the Scots found six more tries, scoring 13 total while the No. 15 Eagles failed to register a single point.
Darcy Graham recorded a hat trick, captain Stafford McDowall added a commanding try and Jamie Dobie, named player of the match, led a swift, fluid Scottish attack that exposed the U.S. defense all game.
The Eagles missed 40 tackles and struggled to maintain possession, unable to counter Scotland’s precision and pace. Many Scottish tries were scored off quick passing sequences to culminate in a run up the wing for a try. The USA weren’t able to seal off the area in time.
The result cements Scotland’s dominance in the matchup following a 42–7 win last year, though the USA’s 30–29 upset in 2018 remains a historic outlier.
For Scotland, this emphatic victory marks a dream start to their Autumn Nations campaign; for the USA, a humbling benchmark against top-tier competition.

The Scots find a whole in the Eagles’ defense. Ollie Smith scores Scotland’s thirteenth and final try of the game as the clock runs out.
With the strong start in the first half, Scotland was able to keep up the effort and not concede any points. It was a strong start to their Autumn Nations play and a tough loss for the USA.
Jamie Dobie Runs Down the Wing for Try – 77′
Scotland 78 – 0 USA
Jamie Dobie, deemed the Quilter player of the match, is soon becoming a sensation. A series of passes concludes with Dobie, who runs right down the wing to cross the try line.
The Eagles have missed 37 tackles this evening for a 78% completion percentage. The team is clearly spent. Many of Scotland’s tries have come from runs straight down the wing. The USA hasn’t been able to seal off the area.

Halftime Whistle Sounds: Score 45-0
Scotland 45 – 0 USA
From minute one, Scotland has dominated the game. After finding their first try in the 5th minutes, the Scots haven’t stopped scoring.
The USA is having trouble making good defensive decisions and gaining any rhythm on offense. The Eagles just look to get more touches and get comfortable in possession. They likely have no illusions of winning but can still make use of the test.
Darcy Graham Finished Try – 35′
Scotland 45 – 0 USA
Passes down the field make their way to Kyle Rowe, who misses the catch but deflects the ball towards Graham. Graham scoops up the ball and slides over the try line.
Hastings’ conversion kick doesn’t quite make it through the posts.
Try Six for Scotland – 27′
Scotland 40 – 0 USA
Sixth Scottish try by Dobie, and Hastings adds the conversion.
As soon as Scotland gets into the outside channel, it seems a try is forthcoming. The USA hasn’t cracked how to defend the Scots. The Eagles have hardly held possession.
Scottish Try by van der Merwe – 23′
Scotland 33 – 0 USA
van der Merwe makes Scotland’s fifth try. Hastings narrowly misses the conversion, which swings too far left.
The USA is having trouble making good reads at the line, springing all kinds of defensive leaks. Scotland’s wingers are linking up to get as many touches as possible. At that point its a numbers game, more hands on ball more scoring opportunities.
Fourth Try for the Scottish Hosts – 19′
Scotland 28 – 0 USA
A beautiful link play between Graham and Jamie Dobie, who catches the assist to bring the ball down the middle right over the try line. Dobie knew exactly where he and his teammates were on the field, and use the spacial awareness to be in the right place at the right time.
Hastings makes the conversion attempt.
3 Tries in 5 Minutes for Scotland – 9′
Scotland 21 – 0 USA
Graham adds the try this time. Scotland is on a roll as they find their third try of the game before the first ten minute mark. Hastings adds the conversion.
If these first few minutes are any indication of the rest of the game, the USA will be looking to just put as many points on the board as possible. The Eagles just look for reps and solid defense.
Scotland Adds Second Try Just Minute Later – 6′
Scotland 14 – 0 USA
Scotland adds another try just a minute later. Duhan van der Merwe adds the points and Darcy Graham adds the conversion.
Scotland Finds First Try – 5′
Scotland 7 – 0 USA
Scotland puts the first points on the board as Dylan Richardson muscles over the try line. The Scots’ clear strategy out the gate is to just keep attacking until they wear down the defense
Adam Hastings makes the conversion.
Scotland Misses Early Opportunity – 2′
Scotland 0 – 0 USA
The match is already off to a fiery start.
Scotland finds an early opportunity to run the ball, but they narrowly miss the chance to bring it all the way over the try line. The USA plays solid defense to block the early challenge.
