UPPER MICHIGAN. (WLUC) – UPDATE: Power companies have gained significant ground in restoration efforts by Wednesday morning following Monday’s blizzard.
UPPCO Manager of Communications and External Affairs Dan Freeborn told TV6 Wednesday morning that its restoration efforts have been completed. This comes after more than 2,200 of its customers across Alger, Baraga, Delta, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Marquette, Menominee, and Schoolcraft Counties lost power Monday morning.
Alger-Delta Cooperative Electric Association — which serves customers across both counties and into Harvey and Marquette along the lakeshore — said in a Facebook post at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday that it had reduced its number of outages to 772. That’s down from the 4,967 outages it said it was dealing with in its initial post Monday. Its outage map showed the bulk of those appeared to be along M-28 between Harvey and Christmas.
The company said it had located some more broken poles Tuesday night and would replace them Wednesday.
The Marquette Board of Light and Power was met with more than 8,000 customers without power Monday morning, which TV6 reported based on the outage map just before 5:00 a.m. that day. As of Wednesday, the outage map shows the MBLP has reduced that number to 1,231.
WeEnergies in the Western U.P. and Cloverland Electric in the Eastern U.P. both showed minimal impact on their customers. Monday morning Cloverland Electric only reported 163 on its outage map, while by the afternoon, WeEnergies’ outage map showed its highest number of outages in Watersmeet (708) and Phelps (973).
Wednesday morning, WeEnergies only showed 182 customers out on the Wisconsin/Michigan border. Cloverland Electric showed nearly zero.

Power companies across the Central and Western U.P. are continuing efforts to restore power Tuesday as thousands remain without power.
As of 12:00 p.m., the Marquette Board of Light and Power’s outage map still showed thousands of customers without power. TV6 has left messages and emailed for updates on the restoration efforts, but has not yet heard back. The power company’s most recent update, posted to Facebook at approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday said widespread “storm damage and limited access to some affected areas,” could lead restoration work to take 2-3 days before all customers are back in service.
The company urged anyone in risk or in need of services to call 2-1-1. Meanwhile, it said crews would be continuing to work until all power was restored. The company additionally provided an earlier post detailing its efforts and safety reminders.
Meanwhile, in the most recent update from the Alger Delta Electric Cooperative at 8:00 Tuesday morning, the cooperative said its crews and mutual aid teams had worked overnight and were back in the field this morning. Even with that work, about 1,800 outages still remained in its service area as of this morning.
UPPCO has whittled its number of outages down significantly Tuesday. The outage map shows only 106 remaining outages in Marquette County and as of 12:30 Tuesday and 132 in Houghton County, compared to 936 in Marquette County and 1,440 outages in Houghton County that the map showed Monday morning.
We will continue to follow the restoration efforts— and as those who continue without power look for resources, a list of warming centers can be found here.

The Marquette Board of Light and Power says restoration work could take two to three days to get all customers back in service. In a Facebook post, MBLP says this is based on the number and location of outages, widespread storm damage and limited access to some affected areas.
MBLP says power may be restored earlier for some as crews continue their work to repair the system as quickly and safely as possible.
MBLP encourages those at risk or requiring additional services to contact 2-1-1 or their city/township offices.

Monday afternoon, Spectrum said it was beginning to assess network damage due to the winter storm.
The press release says service interruptions are due largely to the power outages impacting the U.P.
“Teams are working diligently, alongside the power companies, to make the necessary repairs to our network wherever we have access to do so,” said Charter Communications spokesperson Chris Caporale.
TV6 will continue to keep you informed as updates become available.

The Marquette Board of Light and Power says it is unable to provide any updates to customers without power.
In a Facebook post shortly after 3:00 p.m. ET, the BLP stated that downed trees and high winds were hindering restoration attempts.

Upper Michigan residents across the U.P. are facing outages on Monday as the blizzard conditions continue.
As of 10:00 a.m. ET, UPPCO’s outage map was showing 1,440 outages in Houghton County and 936 in Marquette County. In a press release sent to TV6 at 10:30, UPPCO said it was actively working to restore power to more than 2,200 customers across Alger, Baraga, Delta, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Marquette, Menominee, and Schoolcraft Counties. The company’s own crews are working in tandem with contracted crews it secured in advance.
Meanwhile, the Marquette Board of Light and Power’s online Outage Center was down this morning due to an influx of “too many requests.” In a Facebook post, MBLP said its crews were out working as quickly as possible to restore service, but that conditions were making restoration efforts “extremely difficult.” The company asked customers to prepare for extended outages.
Some outages appear to be due to downed trees on lines. TV6’s Digital Content Manager met a tree completely down on lines at Wilson Street and Forest Park Drive on Monday morning.
WeEnergies’ outage map showed its highest number of outages in Watersmeet (708) and Phelps (973).
We will continue to track outages and crews’ efforts to restore power as updates become available.
